Viewing Copy
“The title Viewing Copy refers to the much-discussed character of the moving image medium, which defines classical art historical concepts of originality and authenticity. Its common immaterial mp4 format allows artists to show their work simultaneously in different places.”-curatorial excerpt
Due to the small scale of the venue and the minimal budget, the concept reflects the open call by introducing the technical elements as aesthetically defined objects in the spatial configuration; this technical setting is capable of showing the heterogenous nature of the videos. The shown works thus become expanded through the image and sound carriers as physical objects, which are suspended in differing scenarios through the chapters of the exhibition.
The suspended elements are part of a secondary construction, the grid, which emphasizes the space’s already present hierarchy, and ties together all of the technical additions to the room. The painted surfaces and the enclosing carpet thus become a homogenous hub, where we can comfortably sit, lie or stand, and observe this copy (of a copy of a copy).
