Conversion Apartment Wedding

Client’s text:

A clever room layout and precise settings give the 54 m2 small old building flat in Berlin’s Wedding district an unexpected generosity. Despite the radical transformation, it was important to Cainelliklaska to honour the character of the old building and to subtly retain the original room layout.

With the demolition of all partition walls, a light-flooded room was created that serves as a kitchen, living room as well as home office and has access to the balcony. In the lane of the former hallway, a wall panel marks a large storage element that is accessible from two sides. Thanks to its clear structure, the kitchen is pleasantly restrained.

The bedroom and bathroom were inscribed in the flat as a compact room-within-a-room construction, which is connected to the large living room via two doors. These allow different routes through the flat, what strengthens the feeling of spaciousness.

Daylight enters the interior bathroom, which is lined with mosaic tiles, via a strip light. Surrounding mirrors in the upper part make the room seem larger. Two floor-to-ceiling niches were integrated into the connecting corridor between the bathroom and the bedroom, which serve as a walk-in wardrobe. Comparable to a bunk, the bedroom is reduced to the essentials. From the bed, the former kitchen window offers a view of the sunrises over Wedding.
