Central Elements of a Metropolis
The existing open space of Plac Defilad forms around the Palace of Culture, built in 1955 as a gift from Stalin to the Polish people. — The Project discusses the possibility of a metropolitan quarter on a site of very specific political, social and historical meaning. — We developed a set of various communal spaces that aim to respond to these conditions. This set is used in a sculpting act, recontextualizing the tower as an object within the urban setting.
The transformation of the plaza and its object is initiated by the inscription of surfaces into the texture of Plac Defilad. The conceived space is formed by the volume, with its market-driven economy coming into play. The Block-shape of the volume serves as an abstract placeholder for a potential development.
